The sandwich doctorate is an internship in doctoral research, usually, but not necessarily, carried out abroad between the beginning and the end of the doctorate in Brazil – hence the nomenclature “sandwich”. Its realization outside Brazil is aligned with the actions and internationalization policy of PPG Design and UAM, collaborating for a partnership between researchers, Research Groups and Postgraduate Programs and aiming at high level academic training in international institutions of excellence. The minimum duration of the sandwich doctorate is 6 (six) and the maximum is 12 (months), and there must be, in the return period, a minimum of 6 (six) months, for the completion of the doctorate in Brazil.

It can be done in two ways: A) by means of a specific internal selection notice for granting a PDSE / CAPES scholarship, as disclosed on the PPG Design – UAM website; B) selection in continuous flow (without scholarship), through submission throughout the year. In this last modality, it will be the responsibility of the doctoral student, together with the doctoral advisor, to send documentation for consideration of the proposal with the PPG Design Graduate Commission. Such documentation must comply with the provisions of the most recent PDSE / CAPES notice, as well as relevant legislation.

In both modalities, the candidate must have passed a qualification exam or, at the very least, have completed a doctorate year in Brazil. Must have good academic performance and demonstrate the capacity for theoretical and experimental deepening of research abroad. It is mandatory to pass a foreign language proficiency exam carried out by an officially recognized institution. The most frequent languages are English, Spanish, French, German and Italian – but it may vary depending on the destination Graduate Program. It is worth noting that Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Portugal, require proficiency in English, as they also receive doctoral students from other countries.

It is necessary that the foreign co-supervisor and the Postgraduate Program abroad are adherent to the Concentration Area, to at least one Research Lines of UAM’s PPG Design, and to the doctoral research project itself – justifying, therefore, the contribution and the realization of the sandwich doctorate. The research plan for the realization of the sandwich doctorate abroad must follow the model provided by CAPES, be pertinent to the thesis project and feasible within the proposed schedule.

Thus, it is necessary that the partnership between the Graduate Programs in Brazil and abroad, as well as between Brazilian advisor and foreign co-supervisor, must be previously established and consolidated.
