It addresses the processes of creation, design and production in contemporary design-art-technology. Discusses the relationship between man, culture and society in the context of distributed processes and practices. It proposes critical thinking about design and the role of the designer in this context. It discusses the complexity inherent to the systemic articulation of design-art-technology with different areas of knowledge, such as biology, geology, engineering, medicine, among others.


THEORY, HISTORY AND CRITICISM OF DESIGN

It deals with theories and stories for the formulation of a critical knowledge of contemporary design. It seeks to deepen the understanding of this context, focusing on technological and cultural changes through a systemic, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective.


DESIGN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY – MASTERS

The course develops questions related to scientific knowledge and scientific methodology in the field of human and technological sciences, emphasizing the importance of critical reflection and research for the field of design. It addresses the panorama of research in design in modernity and contemporaneity, taking as a perspective the methodologies applied in the area of design, and guides the discussion and deepening of the themes arising from individual research projects.


CREATIVITY, INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY IN DESIGN

The discipline addresses issues related to the processes of creation, innovation and sustainability in the field of design. It discusses social, cultural and economic changes involving the subject, the environment, the processes and the means of creation and production. It deals with the body in the perspective of design and observes in the individual and collective actions the human issues of coexistence, occupation and intervention in space. It addresses the sensory and accessibility aspects involved in the subject’s actions and productions in the contemporary.


DESIGN AND BODY: CONTEMPORARY STUDIES

The discipline focuses on the different (de) markings of design, especially hypermedia that (re) inscribes some conceptual notes when experiencing the notions of the body and its adaptive condition in contemporary culture. From the encounter between design and body, image, performance and subjectivity are observed, as developments, passages, provocations and artifices post- (un) constructed by language, which equates a syncretic dynamics.
It investigates biotechnology, cyberculture, hybridism, robotics and interface as some of the concepts treated epistemologically in the field of design in dialogue with the contemporary body, analyzing sociocultural transformations as an indispensable instrument of critical reading about the body, expanding its objects of study and media environments to reach different fields of design, art, communication and culture that are related as areas of knowledge.


ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN: UBIC TECHNOLOGIES

It approaches the concept of ubiquity from the perspectives of design and art, investigating the design processes and their formal elements. Research projects in the context of ubiquitous technologies with a view to mapping, monitoring and processing data. He studies interactive computer systems embedded in objects and spaces, reflecting on human-computer interaction and socio-cultural relations.


INTERACTIVE DIGITAL MEDIA DESIGN

It addresses issues related to the design elements inherent to the design of interactive digital media, with regard to its informational, navigational, interactive and interface aspects. It focuses on the design concepts present in transmedia projects, on social networks, on Interactive Digital Television (TVDi) and on mobile devices.


DESIGN, INFORMATION AND HYPERMEDIATE ENVIRONMENTS

The course focuses on the conceptualization and fundamentals of classical hypermedia and the relationships between multimedia, hypertext and hypermedia. Discuss the design: information, interaction and navigation. Describes adaptive hypermedia. Differentiates Web 1.0 and Web 2.0.


FASHION DESIGN: ART, CREATION AND SUBJECTIVITY

The discipline contextualizes the dialogue between the concepts and forms engendered in Fashion Design and the Kinetic, Optical and Pop arts, investigating the transformations that take place simultaneously in the field of forms, affects and ways of existing. By emphasizing experimental aspects, the discipline investigates the moments when Fashion Design causes ruptures with hegemonic models, introducing important ethical and aesthetic questions.


AUDIOVISUAL CREATION: FROM LETTER TO IMAGE

The discipline analyzes the creation, its process and stages, the conceptual and technological relationships in the development of projects and / or products that relate the verbal-visual and sound issues in an audiovisual approach.
The study of the creative process that generates an audiovisual product in all its stages refers to the analysis of drafts, readings, debates, the selection of materials, filming, editing of images, texts and sounds, the choice of the track sound and other aspects performed by the author (s) of the work, in addition to the examination and option of the technical and technological means employed, which will allow at the end to glimpse the poetic project (that is, the proposal, objective, idea, desire, will ) of its author (s).

It deals with aspects related to user recognition for the design of systems and products that interact with the user in an affective and emotional way. It proposes the understanding of the human body as a source of data and information relevant to the design of interactive interfaces. It focuses on concepts from artificial intelligence, affective computing, ubiquity, wearable computers, network communication and biointerfaces.


DESIGN AND ART IN EDUCATION: HISTORICAL READING IN THE CONTEXT OF CONTEMPORANEITY

He studies design in the context of everyday experience from an anthropological perspective. Proposes to discuss
the problematic of places in contemporary times and the cultural role of the designer, establishing a theoretical and critical approach about the relationships between individuals and social groups. It also seeks to understand the production, use and disposal of artifacts, through the study of material culture and
vernacular knowledge.


DESIGN AND SPACIALITIES: MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES

It investigates the context of mobile technologies to reflect on the human-computer relationship and the specifics of projects operated in the users’ located physical space. It studies mobility and hybridization processes between the physical and digital environments and their implications for everyday life. It reflects on the theoretical and conceptual aspects, formal and aesthetic, of wearable mobile devices in processes of reconfiguration of body-space relations.


GRAPHIC DESIGN AND LANGUAGE

It studies the language elements, the creation procedures and the communicational aspects of graphic design. It addresses the multitude of records in different media, objects, supports and surfaces, as well as the contaminations, hybridities and interrelationships of graphic design with other aspects of design and with the visual arts.

It studies design and its promising materiality for creating meanings. It seeks to understand memory as a resource capable of revealing the production of meanings in the process of creating the designer. It discusses the relationship between creator and work, thinking of objects as storytellers that permeate human existence. It makes it possible to perceive added values both for motivating desire and possession and for knowing stories of use, function, permanence, wear and tear and disposal.


DESIGN AND NETWORKS: TECHNOLOGICAL MEDIATIONS

It studies design projects and the modes of creation and use, mediated by visual, sound, audiovisual languages, in the context of distributed networks. Research on design processes shaped by the characteristic interaction of collaborative environments and the convergence between languages. Investigates iteration processes and visualization of interfaces and computational objects.


DESIGN, PHOTOGRAPHY AND VISUAL POETICS

It studies the relations of photography and design as associations of languages that are configured in a process of hybridism, both in the technological aspect and in the process of visual representation. It works the relationship between photography and hypermedia, as well as the construction of the image and its application as information, persuasion, expression and illusion. It examines photographic processes present in the composition of visual poetics, focusing on aspects of creation and expressive and projectual production.


DESIGN CREATION STRATEGIES

It investigates different approaches to creative processes from historical, philosophical, technological and aesthetic perspectives. Stimulates the thinking of creative strategies applied to the field of Design, through reflections around the concepts of creation, innovation and problem solving.


VISUAL STUDIES

It investigates the context of mobile technologies to reflect on the human-computer relationship and the specifics of projects operated in the users’ located physical space. It reflects on the theoretical-conceptual, formal and aesthetic aspects, of wearable mobile devices in processes of reconfiguration of body-space relationships.


Credits in Program activities
The student must take two (2) compulsory subjects:
(1) Design Research Methodology
(2) Theory, History and Criticism of Design or Design, Art and Technology
These are complemented with three (03) optional subjects that must be chosen from the list of subjects offered every six months by the program.
It is worth mentioning that the choice of disciplines must be made in agreement with the course coordinator or with the supervising professor.After completing the five (05) subjects, the student pays 15 credits – 225 hours in subjects. For the programmed activities, 15 credits – 225 hours are attributed. For the preparation of the dissertation, 20 credits – 300 hours. Thus, the total workload is 50 credits, that is, 750 hours of academic activities with the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program Master in Design.
